Principal’s Welcome 2018-2019
Dear Allen School Community,
I hope this letter finds you rested and rejuvenated from our most recent summer break. As your principal, I am so excited to continue to deepen our relationships and work together to achieve Allen School’s vision of academic, emotional and artistic growth for every child.
Each new school year begins with hope, excitement, and a drive to learn and grow. My goal is to insure these feeling occur all year long. As a district, our yearlong theme is “Nurturing Relationships through Gratitude”. Here at Allen, we are embracing this theme with open minds and hearts. Last year, we implemented a new Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Program from National University called Sanford Harmony. This year, we will extend and deepen this program by engaging students and adults in activities that support building the skills of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. This program will focus on students learning how to developing and maintain positive peer relationships, coping strategies through mindfulness, and how to respond and resolve conflicts with peers. Research supports that implementation of Social and Emotional Learning Programs (SEL) positively impacts student success now and into the future. This is an exciting time and we are so excited to grow alongside your child and family!
With the implementation of SEL, we know that our students will just soar to success in academics. That said, teachers will be working on providing tons of opportunities for engaging tasks and activities that get students to collaborate and problem solve. Students will deepen their learning in English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies through collaborative conversations, writing, and projects. Students will also have many opportunities to become school leaders through Safety Patrol, Student Council, and the Speech Contest to name a few.
Parent involvement is highly valued and encouraged at Allen School. Aside from volunteering in classrooms, parents can be seen monitoring traffic at the school entrance so that all children enter campus safely, tutoring students, and providing enrichment experiences. We will learn together at parent workshops on math, literacy, and social/emotional growth of children. Additionally, we invite you to our weekly Meet Up Mondays with our students and our monthly Family First Friday Meetings for a cup of coffee, information, and conversation. We are also extremely fortunate to have an active Parent-Teacher Club (PTC) and have many parents that volunteer to organize and oversee several fun events during the school year that truly bring the community together. I’m already looking forward to the well-attended Harvest Ball scheduled for October 26th. Finally, we are starting an intergenerational garden club with members of AARP, so, if you have family members who are retired and have a green thumb, please invite them to Allen!
I am thrilled to continue the partnership between our school, the home, and the community because Together, We Soar! Please feel free to email me, give me a call, or leave me a note any time. I make every effort to return all messages within a reasonable time frame.
I can’t wait to start our wonderful year of learning together!
