Sunday Update (28 March 2021)

Please enjoy your Spring Break, Allen Eagles!

Please note that Monday, April 5th is a minimum day, per the district-approved calendar.

The week of April 5th to April 9th is a teacher preparation week: This means that all students will receive some synchronous, online instruction from their current teacher, but will receive the remaining required instructional minutes asynchronously online.

April 12th begins our hybrid instructional model. Some students will be on campus in the morning cohort and some will be on campus in the afternoon cohort. Other students will continue in the Distance Learning instructional model for the remainder of the school year. Please note that this change to hybrid instruction may require many students, even those continuing in Distance Learning, to be re-assigned to a different teacher.

Please check your email for more up-to-date information over Spring Break regarding your child’s placement. This email may be in your junk or spam folders. If you did not receive an email from the school with this information, it is because we do not have your current email address on file in our system. Kindly call the school office at (619) 479-3662 to update this.

As always, continue to communicate with your child’s teacher and the school office at (619) 479-3662 should you have any questions.

Hybrid Model Updates

We are preparing the school for the April 12th return of some students to campus via the hybrid model. Please see the helpful infographic below:

Please see the video below to learn about the ingress and egress procedures for students returning to campus via the hybrid/in-person instructional model here:

We have sent emails and made phone calls for the last three weeks to contact every parent to get their preference for learning model for the remainder of the school year.  To clarify, there were three choices for parents to express a preference:

  1. Express an interest in keeping your child in Distance Learning, Monday-Friday.  Students in this learning model will stay on the current learning schedule that we have been using since September 2020:  Instructional minutes for your child stay the same, with 3 hours of synchronous learning for Kindergarten students, 3 hours and 50 minutes for students in grades 1-3, and 4 hours for students in grades 4 through 6.  Please note:  a parent that chooses this option may have their child be assigned to a different teacher.  Instructional minutes for your child stay the same.
  2. Express a preference for enrolling your child in the morning cohort for in-person instruction, Monday through Thursday.  This will allow for 155 minutes of in-person instruction at school on those days.  In this model, your child will be dropped off at school between 8:40 am and 8:50 am in front of Daly Academy.  Students will stay in their vehicle while a staff member performs a health screening that includes affirming that no one in the household has symptoms of COVID-19 and parents will consent to having their child undergo a temperature check.  Students will begin learning in their classrooms at 8:50 am.  Parents should pick up children at 11:25 am in the traffic loop in front of Daly Academy.  There is no after school childcare in this option. Once home, students will be required to complete their remaining required instructional time asynchronously, online.  Also, all students in this model will have 155 minutes of synchronous, distance learning on Fridays, from their homes and will complete any remaining instructional time asynchronously from home.  No in-person instruction will occur on campus on Fridays for families in this learning model.  Please note:  A parent that chooses this option may have their child assigned to a different teacher.  Total instructional minutes for your child stay the same, but there are only 2 hours and 35 minutes of in-person instruction, Monday through Thursday in this model.
  3. Express a preference for enrolling your child in the afternoon cohort for in-person instruction, Monday through Thursday.  This will allow for your child to begin the day at home with asynchronous instruction, online.  Students will also have 155 minutes of in-person instruction at school.  In this model, there is no before school childcare.  Your child will be dropped off at school between 12:25 pm and 12:35 pm in front of Daly Academy.  Students will stay in their vehicle while a staff member performs a health screening that includes affirming that no one in the household has symptoms of COVID-19 and will consent to having their child undergo a temperature check.  Students will begin learning at 12:35 pm.  Parents should pick up children at 3:10 pm in the traffic loop in front of Daly Academy.  There is no after school childcare in this option.  Also, all students in this model will have 155 minutes of synchronous, distance learning on Fridays, from their homes and will complete any remaining instructional time asynchronously from home.  No in-person instruction will occur on campus on Fridays.  Please note:  A parent that chooses this option may have their child assigned to a different teacher.  Total instructional minutes for your child stay the same, but there are only 2 hours and 35 minutes of in-person instruction in this model, Monday through Thursday.

Please note:  Our school team tried its very best to accommodate parent preferences.  Please know that despite our best efforts, we may have offered some families an option that does not match their preferences. We will create a waitlist for in-person instruction. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and flexibility.

The last day for parents to express a preference for their child’s learning model was Friday, March 19th.  Please contact the school office directly at (619) 479-3662 with any lingering questions.  The deadline was created so that we may be able to plan for students and prepare for the April 12th start date of these 3 models.

Please note that we will do our best to accommodate our families’ preferences, but that space and availability are limited. For example, a family who wants the morning shift may be assigned the afternoon shift or distance learning instead.

  • Kindly contact the school office directly at (619) 479-3662 and our staff will do its best to accommodate any changes, pending availability and space. This means your child will be placed on a waitlist.
  • The start date for this model has been set: April 12, 2021.
  • See the working schedule of the Hybrid/In-Person Cohort below.

Families who will drop off and pick up their children in the hybrid model will drop off students in front of Daly Academy or at the Kindergarten gate (according to grade level), per the graphic below:

Only students in the Distance Learning Support Program, students walking to school, and students who arrive late will enter campus via the front school gates. No parents or volunteers will be allowed on campus.

COVID-19 Corner: Health and Safety Updates

Please wear a mask, wash your hands, sanitize frequently used surfaces, and do not congregate with people living outside of your immediate household.

Please see the latest updates regarding public health and safety from the County of San Diego, including information about COVID-19 testing and vaccination, here. With the arrival of the vaccine designed to prevent COVID-19, our District is happy to share a fact sheet that details why the vaccines are safe and effective. Our county is moving into Phase 1C now.

The San Diego County Office of Education encourages families to learn about the importance of getting vaccinated. COVID-19 vaccines are effective at keeping you from getting COVID-19 and they have other benefits, too. In the rare case that you do still get COVID-19, the vaccine may help keep you from getting seriously ill. Getting vaccinated may also protect people around you, particularly people at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19Click here for English, or here for Spanish for facts about the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines.

San Diego County Vaccine Prioritization

Visit covid19.ca.gov/vaccines/ for more information.

If you experience any symptoms of COVID-19, please also stay home, leaving only to get tested or seek medical attention.

People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus.  People with these symptoms may have COVID-19 and should stay home:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

There are a number of testing sites in the South County, thanks to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. It is highly encouraged for families to make an appointment for COVID-19 testing in advance. You may wish to reference 211sandiego.org or the County’s website here. Please note that testing sites can only provide information about COVID-19 testing, not vaccinations.

Weekly Meal Distribution

  • Meal distribution occurs every Monday (starting on April 12th) from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm for all students. Pick up the 5 days worth of meals at the front of the school. Please follow all safety directives, such as wearing a mask or facial covering that covers the mouth and nose. This free service is available for all families that attend a school in the Chula Vista Elementary School District.

Would you like your child to eat school meals this year? The school encourages all families who may need assistance to apply for free and reduced meals via the district website. These forms must be completed again every year! Find the forms and information at the district link here. We encourage all families to complete this form as the school receives additional funding to support families who qualify.

Hybrid Model Updates

We are preparing the school for the April 12th return of some students to campus via the hybrid model.

Please note:  Our school team is trying to do its very best to accommodate parent preferences.  Please know that despite our best efforts, we may have to offer some families an option that does not match their preferences. Again, families may be offered an option that isn’t their first choice for their child’s teacher and learning model.

  • If you still need to change your preference, the deadline to do so was before Friday, March 19th. Kindly contact the school office directly at (619) 479-3662 and our staff will do its best to accommodate any changes, pending availability and space.

Our district values your input! Share your thoughts with us via Thought Exchange, an on-line learning process to help us better understand what is important to you. Our dialogue through Thought Exchange enables us to hear more about your concerns as well as the things you appreciate about our schools and District. Please prioritize a few moments of your time to contribute to the success of our educational system by providing feedback that will better inform our decision-making. This will also help us as we look at annual revisions to our Local Control and Accountability Plan. Please share your thoughts about Allen and other CVESD schools via THOUGHT EXCHANGE.  All info shared is confidential. Click the direct link here to respond now through April 2nd.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences began on Thursday, March 18 and end Thursday, March 25.  Teachers have already sent home information for you to sign up for your child’s conference. If you did not connect with your child’s teacher about a conference and would like one, please contact the school office. Please make every effort to attend the scheduled conference to discuss your child’s progress.  Teachers will share very important information and you will have an opportunity to ask questions about your child’s progress this school year. They will also be confirming your preference for learning model (distance learning, AM in-person instruction, or PM in-person instruction) that will begin on April 12, 2021 at this time. Again, please know that while will do our very best to honor your preferences, space is limited in each instructional model and many students will be required to change teachers.

Please remember that all students will have 2 hours of synchronous (live) instruction online with their teachers on conference days. The remaining required instructional minutes will be asynchronous classroom activities (which may includes activities such as SmartyAnts, Achieve3000, and iReady).

Allen Update (17 March 2021)

Hybrid Model Begins on April 12th

Please see the letter below from our Superintendent of schools, Dr. Francisco Escobedo:

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is my pleasure to share our District’s official notice to you that our in-person, hybrid instructional model for students will begin on Monday, April 12. CVESD teachers who are working in the in-person hybrid instructional model will return to their respective schools on Monday, April 5. This ensures teachers and staff have appropriate time to prepare for the transition from distance learning to in-person instruction. Reopening details will be shared at a Virtual Town Hall Meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23.

As you know, parents can select the in-person hybrid model or keep their child(ren) in distance learning for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year. At a special meeting on Tuesday, a Board of Education majority noted that our District is on track to move forward with in-person instruction because we have met the conditions laid out in the Memorandum of Understanding with Chula Vista Educators, the bargaining group that represents teachers. A key condition for reopening was that San Diego County return to the Red Tier, as defined in the state’s tiered system. This week, County officials announced that COVID-19 case rates lowered enough for the state to re-designate San Diego from the most restrictive Purple Tier to the less restrictive Red Tier—paving the way for school districts across the region to reopen or expand in-person instruction.

Starting school in a hybrid format ensures that a limited number of students are on campus at any one time, allowing protocols such as physical distancing to be more easily implemented. In CVESD, the hybrid model consists of in-person instruction in an a.m./p.m. format Monday-Thursday, with Fridays reserved for distance learning.

It would be the first time that our schools have reopened to daily instruction since the pandemic forced school closures a year ago. I am indeed excited to welcome back students to in-person instruction. I know so many staff and families are excited to return as well. I also recognize the anxiety that some have about a return of even some of our students to campus. I want to reassure you that our District is going above and beyond when it comes to safety protocols and requirements. A hybrid instructional format is not a perfect solution. But it is an important step in restoring educational equity to our community. Students and families have suffered immensely during the pandemic from the prolonged school closures. Now, it is time to heal. It is time for all of us to recover and rebuild together.

Thank you for your patience, resiliency and grit in these extraordinary 12 months since we had to close our schools.

Warm regards,

Francisco Escobedo, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Allen Elementary’s Hybrid Model Plan

We are preparing the school for the April 12th return of some students to campus via the hybrid model.

Friday, March 19th, 2021 is the final day to share your preference for learning model for your child.  The Superintendent of CVESD, Dr. Escobedo, shared via email and here that some students will return to in-person learning via a hybrid model on April 12th, 2021.  We have sent emails and made phone calls for the last three weeks to contact every parent to get their preference for learning model for the remainder of the school year.  To clarify, there are three choices for parents to express a preference:

Please note:  Our school team is trying to do its very best to accommodate parent preferences.  Please know that despite our best efforts, we may have to offer some families an option that does not match their preferences.  The last day for parents to express a preference for their child’s learning model is Friday, March 19th.  Please contact the school office directly at (619) 479-3662 to express this.  The deadline was created so that we may be able to plan for students and prepare for the April 12th start date of these 3 models.

More information was posted on our school blog at https://allenelementary.org/.  This includes Dr. Escobedo’s letter to parents, a schedule for the two in-person models, and a diagram for entry onto campus for students.  Please note that the current guidelines do not permit adults or volunteers on campus at this time.

CVESD will hold a virtual Town Hall on Tuesday, March 23rd at 6 pm online.  That meeting will be accessible in English and Spanish at http://www.cvesd.org.  Mr. Greenwell, our school’s Principal, will hold a meeting online for all Allen parents on Wednesday, March 24th at 6 pm.  This meeting will be to share detailed information about these three models.  That meeting be accessed via our school blog or here:

https://SDSU.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0kd-2tqTkqGNM5eFHVm_dHFn5xxcUucaVO

Lastly, please know that our entire school team will make every effort to ensure that this transition is as smooth as possible.  Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the school office with questions or concerns.

  • If you need to change your preference, please do so before this Friday, March 19th by contacting the school office directly at (619) 479-3662.
  • The start date for this model has been set: April 12, 2021.
  • More information may be available via www.cvesd.org.
  • See an example of the Hybrid/In-Person Cohort Schedule for Allen Elementary below.

Dr. Escobedo will hold a Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, March 23rd at 6 pm to share information about safety and well-being of our students, as well as answer questions from parents. The meeting will be accessible from http://www.cvesd.org. Please see this short YouTube video for additional safety information.

More detailed information regarding the particular details at Allen will be coming from our Principal, Mr. John Greenwell, at a parent meeting on Wednesday, March 24th at 6 pm. The link for that meeting will be posted on our school blog in the Sunday Update for March 21st.

Allen Update (15 March 2021)

Update on the Hybrid Model

We are preparing the school for a possible return of some students to campus via the hybrid model.

We have asked for parent input regarding the preferred model of learning for each family. We have asked for this parent input, either via the survey in January 2021 or through phone calls home the last two weeks: Families could share a preference to keep their child in the Distance Learning model for the remainder of the school year or could share a preference to have their child attend school in person for 155 minutes a day, Monday through Thursday.

Students of families in this hybrid model will select a preference of either the morning shift from 8:50 am to 11:25 am or the afternoon shift from 12:35 pm to 3:10 pm, Monday through Thursday with Distance Learning on Fridays for students in the hybrid model.

Please note that parent input does not guarantee a spot in that preferred model.  Please also note that all children, whether a family chooses to stay in Distance Learning or attend in person via the AM or PM shifts, may be assigned to a different teacher.

Please note that we will do our best to accommodate our families’ preferences, but that space and availability are limited. For example, a family who wants the morning shift may be assigned the afternoon shift or distance learning instead.  While we have heard from about 85% of our families, we hope to hear from 100% of our families by this Friday, March 19th.

  • If you need to change your preference, please do so before this Friday, March 19th by contacting the school office directly at (619) 479-3662.
  • Although no start date for this model has been set, it is likely to occur sometime in April 2021.
  • More information may be available at the CVESD Special Meeting of the Board of Education on Tuesday, March 16th at 5 pm. That meeting is accessible online via www.cvesd.org.
  • See an example of the Hybrid/In-Person Cohort Schedule below.

Hero Squad

Our school is proud to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society this year through the Hero Squad community service learning program!    This program began on March 8th and extends until March 26th.

The Hero Squad program is a great way to integrate core Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies into our school in an organic, philanthropic, and engaging way. Today, it is more important than ever for our students to demonstrate empathy, teamwork, and build relationships across distance in order to strengthen our school and community.  By participating in the Hero Squad program, our school has received a free comprehensive supplemental STEM+ Curriculum infused with SEL activities for your classrooms.  This exciting curriculum includes SEL writing prompts, kindness calendars, emotional check-in activities, and SEL focused conversation cards.  These amazing resources can also be sent home for families to engage in.

Please see your child’s teacher for more information. Students will earn Hero Gear creating an online fundraising page and fundraising online.  Families will need to find their child’s classroom page for Hero Squad by visiting HeroSquad.org, finding our school, and signing up there.

Reopening Playbook for Parents

We are pleased to announce the release of the Reopening Playbook for Parents. This document outlines our safe return to in-person instruction. Please review this document thoroughly by clicking here or copying and pasting this link into your web browser: https://indd.adobe.com/view/0476af62-e46a-44d1-9348-5fc8660c582b

As part of our agreement with Chula Vista Educators, which is the bargaining group that represents teachers, our District will reopen to in-person instruction starting with a “hybrid” instructional format—provided that all health and safety conditions are met. A key condition is that San Diego County return to the “red” tier as defined in the state’s tiered-level system. Our county is currently in the most restrictive “purple” tier. Our county will need to drop to an adjusted case rate of 7 or fewer new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people—for two consecutive weeks—before we can start in-person instruction. As of this writing, there is reason for optimism that a move to the red tier is on the horizon, based upon the downward trend in adjusted case rates. Once that occurs, parents and school staff will be provided two-weeks’ notice before the start of the first day of in-person school to ensure adequate preparation.

Please note that the Governor’s updated guidance came out recently—months after we reached agreement with our teachers about a safe return to in-person instruction. Be reassured that our District is prepared for in-person instruction in a “hybrid” model with students attending either morning or afternoon sessions in order to minimize the number of individuals on campus at any one time. Parents also will have the option to keep their child(ren) in distance learning for the remainder of 2020-21 school year. Finally, a friendly reminder that this document is a living document that will continue to evolve as guidance from state and county officials changes. Please bookmark this page for handy reference as the return to in-person instruction nears: https://indd.adobe.com/view/0476af62-e46a-44d1-9348-5fc8660c582b.

Inner Explorer Comes to Allen

Every classroom in our school will be practicing mindfulness and stress reduction techniques every day with the Inner Explorer program to enhance social-emotional learning. Focusing on mindful breathing and the awareness of thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations, the simple “just press play” program fosters skills such as improved focus, compassion, gratitude, and self-regulation as key elements in students’ continuous improvement.

Inner Explorer has advantages for families, too. The secular program is designed to be easy, requires no previous experience, and can be incorporated into any part of your day. Proven outcomes of daily practice include, but are not limited to:

  • Stress reduction
  • Better overall mental health and well-being
  • Improved awareness
  • Enhanced emotional regulation
  • Better academic and professional performance

Inner Explorer’s Tune In feature even allows me to share the lesson we hear in the classroom with you every day, bridging school to home. You can practice individually, together with your child/children, or children can practice mindfulness on their own. When I press “Play” in the classroom, Inner Explorer will notify you via automated email with a link to practice. The links do not expire, but you may only listen to each practice once. To opt in to Tune In, click on the link below. You will need to enter your name, email address and phone number (optional).https://xp.innerexplorer.org/compass/adminInvites?param1=y52JwxUPmqHMn7sx+WiF/3ip4pLLjv8bxew+Ic5KTg0=¶m2=b6/A1e03uMUTM9vXxug8QA==¶m3=KfKbxLJKZ5BmSvLT3DdGibPRInJkIHzKEnZF62JQ70k=

Inner Explorer Comes to Allen

Great news!

For more information, please watch the Introduction to Inner Explorer video. Additional resources can be found on the Inner Explorer website at www.InnerExplorer.org. For questions about the program, please feel free to email tech@innerexplorer.org.

Please note that the Governor’s updated guidance came out just days ago—months after we reached agreement with our teachers about a safe return to in-person instruction.
