Allen Sunday Update (12 July 2020)

Happy Sunday Allen Families! We hope you are staying safe this summer. We miss you!

We have a few new updates this week and hope to have more information at the end of the week for next week’s update!

Recovery Intercession

The Special Education and Pupil Services Department is offering a Recovery Intersession for all Special Education students in Grades 1st through 6th (for the next school year 2020-2021) before the beginning of the start of the regular school year at Allen. This is not a distance learning opportunity, but an at-school opportunity for students to recoup lost learning during the unexpected emergency school closures due to COVID-19. The school day will be 3 hours and 30 minutes from 8:00-11:30 and held daily from August 10, 2020 to August 21, 2020. Since this special opportunity is not part of a child’s IEP, transportation will not be provided, and the school will not hold IEP meetings or conduct IEP assessments. If your child has an IEP and you did not receive an email about this program, please email Ms. Sisi Garcia at maria.garcia@cvesd.org for more info.

Pizza Hut’s Camp Book It Program

Parents can now sign up for the first ever Camp BOOK IT! and keep rewarding your children all summer long. Track and reward your kids’ reading for July and August in the program’s digital dashboard. When they meet their monthly reading goal, they’ll receive a free one-topping Personal Pan Pizza® from Pizza Hut.

Check out https://www.bookitprogram.com/book-it-for-parents for more details and to sign up for this free program.

Summer Learning Camp at Allen

A small number of students per grade level will be invited to attend a Summer Learning Camp (SLC) at Allen Elementary this August 2020. SLC will be 3 hours and 30 minutes from 8:00-11:30 and held daily from August 10, 2020 to August 21, 2020 at Allen Elementary.

Summer Learning Camp will provide instruction in reading and mathematics to students who may benefit from additional intervention. During each day of the Summer Learning Camp, students will receive one-on-one instruction, small group instruction, and social emotional learning from excellent teachers within our District. Each child’s individual literacy skills will be assessed and addressed during this ten-day camp. This experience is intended for a limited number of students: Only those students needing additional support in reading foundational skills and mathematics will be invited to attend.

Current safety protocols set forth by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) will be in place. Guidelines and protocols are likely to change frequently based on the needs of the local community. Based on what is known at this time:

  • Students and employees will wear face masks at all times.
  • Handwashing and hygiene will be regularly enforced.
  • Daily disinfection of classrooms will occur.
  • Daily health screenings and temperature checks of staff and students will occur.
  • Physical distancing will be in place within the classroom, to the extent possible, following CDPH guidelines.
  • Minimal interaction between groups of students will occur.

Additional information and details will be shared with the families of students invited to attend the Summer Learning Camp at Allen prior to the start of the camp.

Virtual Calming Room

Feeling anxious or stressed? As we continue to adapt to these unprecedented circumstances, we know that managing our stress is critical to our getting through this season of uncertainty. However, I believe we don’t just go through difficult times but we can grow through difficult times if we choose to do so. Change is inevitable, but progress is a choice. One area that we can choose for our social and emotional growth and well-being is self-care. I encourage your family (adults and children) to take a moment and try this Virtual Calming Room, created for the staff, parents, and students at our sister school, Camarena Elementary School.

Preventing the Summer Slide

Worried about summer learning loss? Here are ten tips for you that you can do during the summer break to keep up your skills.

  1. Read and discuss some of the recommended Common Core Standards Text Exemplars.
  2. Keep a journal on the things you do each day, games you play, programs you watch, etc.
  3. Do some fun math activities or play board games like Monopoly, Sudoku, Yahtzee, Boggle, or Qwirkle.
  4. Choose a few of the K-2 Reading/Writing activities (English) (Spanish).
  5. Keep a science journal noticing the changes in the plants or the types of creatures in your neighborhood. What insects, reptiles, birds, and mammals live in your area? Why?
  6. Listen to Podcasts and reduce your screen time. You can listen in the car, too!
  7. Visit a Virtual Museum!
  8. Try out some of the CVESD VAPA Activities.
  9. CVESD has prepared materials for Summer Learning at Home.
  10. In addition, students, including students moving on to middle school, can continue to use all district online programs through July 31, 2020.

Health and Safety Reminders

COVID-19 presents real health risks to our community. A friendly reminder to please wear a mask or face covering when you are outside your own home, maintain physical distancing, and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with water and soap.

School Office Hours and Residency Verification Update

The school office remains closed to the public. Beginning August 12, 2020, the school office hours will be 8 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. If you have any questions, you may contact the school office at (619) 479-3662 and we will respond as soon as the office reopens. We will start the Residency Verification process shortly after the office reopens: Check back here for updates.

We will continue to provide weekly updates on this blog every Sunday and expect to hear more details regarding what the upcoming school year will look like by next week’s update. Please continue to check the district’s website, http://www.cvesd.org, and the school blog at http://www.allenelementary.org for weekly updates.

Download the revised Calendar!

Next year’s calendar is out! Classes will resume on Monday, August 31, 2020, with the last day of school on Tuesday, June 15, 2021. Please note the absence of a fall break on this revised calendar as it closely mirrors traditional school year calendars of other districts in San Diego County. We highly recommend that all families download a copy of this calendar and make note of all vacations and holidays so that students are present for all scheduled days of school.

We also encourage families to schedule doctor and dentist appointments over the breaks or on minimum days so that students do not miss any learning. You may download a copy of the calendar here:
